In 2020, a small group of local people came together to transform a tiny plot of waste ground at the bottom of The Sandel Centre car park. What was once an overlooked corner has grown into a vibrant, welcoming garden full of life, colour and community spirit.
Step into the garden and you'll discover a peaceful, tranquil space, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Bees buzz, butterflies drift by, and birds provide a gentle soundtrack as they feed or hop about. Visitors often stop to enjoy a cuppa, relax on one of the many seats, and take a moment of calm in a busy world.
Though small in size — just 27.4 metres long and 3.6 metres wide — the garden is thoughtfully designed, with every inch carefully used. Four main raised beds sit alongside smaller beds around the perimeter. One bed is dedicated to herbs, another to flowers, while the remaining beds grow a variety of fruit and vegetables.
All produce is freely available for the community to pick and enjoy.
The Garden Library has become a much-loved feature, with books regularly exchanged by visitors. There's even a small supply of dog biscuits, ensuring many local dogs insist on stopping by for a garden visit too.
The garden is also a lively community hub. Over the years, it has hosted children's gardening clubs, coffee mornings, birthday celebrations, school and nursery visits, teenage events, festive Christmas transformations and much more.
What began as a simple idea has become a cherished green space — a place to grow, connect and slow down.

It is a great wee garden set in the community and is a good way to meet new people on Tuesday mornings and it's a safe place to go if you need out of the hustle of everyday life. Many an evening I have gone there in summer months with a bag of chips just to sit in the sun and enjoy the peace and tranquillity, and the bird song is surreal coming from the hedges.
